Naturalization is the conferring of citizenship upon a person who was not born with that status. If you are an immigrant wishing to become a U.S. citizen, contact the Law Firm of Jonathan A. Bartell. Based in Cleveland, Ohio, the firm assists clients statewide and nationwide in meeting the many requirements for becoming a naturalized citizen.

Who Can Become Naturalized?
A permanent legal resident can apply for U.S. citizenship after residing in the United States for a proscribed period of time and meeting the qualifications. If you have married a U.S. citizen, you can apply for naturalization after three years of marriage. Individuals who have obtained a green card can apply after five years. If you have been convicted of certain crimes, the process may take longer. Children born in the U.S., born abroad to a U.S. citizen or legally adopted by a U.S. citizen are considered naturalized citizens. Children of immigrants can be granted citizenship when the parents become naturalized.

Interview and Citizenship Test
The Law Firm of Jonathan A. Bartell can helps clients file the N-400 application for citizenship, which requires immigrants to pass:

  • An English proficiency test — a citizen must be able to read, write and speak English
  • A civics test — the applicant must pass a test on U.S. history and its form of government.
These tests are administered by an immigration officer during a formal interview. Mr. Bartell helps clients prepare for the civics test by giving them questions that may be asked during the interview. In limited cases (such as illness), the person may be granted a waiver from the language requirement or the civics test.

Dedication to Clients through the Whole Journey
If your application for citizenship has been denied, you can apply again. The Law Firm of Jonathan A. Bartell will be with you throughout the process to help you meet the requirements. If necessary, Mr. Bartell will travel to a foreign embassy or consulate to facilitate your naturalization.
